HOUSE BILL 1499
AN ACT relative to credit for American sign language and transliteration as a foreign language.

This bill provides that if a public school offers American sign language or transliteration it shall be offered for credit as a foreign language.

AN ACT relative to credit for American sign language and transliteration as a foreign language.
Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:
1 Instruction of Pupils; Foreign Languages; American Sign Language and Transliteration Added. Amend RSA 189:20 to read as follows:
189:20
Foreign Languages. A foreign language may be taught in
elementary schools; provided, that the course of study [(]or its
equivalent[)] outlined by the state board in [the branches named in]
RSA 189:19 be not abridged but be taught in compliance with the law of the
state. American sign language and transliteration shall be credited as
foreign languages under this section if offered in a primary or secondary
school.
2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect 60 days after its passage.
